It’s Christmas season, so we present the use of OctoPIM for a decoration webshop with Christmas articles.
In the webshop of "The decoration store" customers can find the following categories for the Christmas season:
- Christmas wreaths and accessories
- Christmas decorations for the tree
- Christmas decoration
- Christmas wrapping paper
- Christmas textiles
The products, variants and articles contained in the categories could be edited and exported in OctoPIM bundled via a catalog. We will shed light on the possibilities of catalogs for " The decoration store " in another article.
For each of the above five categories, we have created a sample product with all attributes:

Although the products are so different and belong to different store categories, almost all attributes can be bundled into one base family, since they occur and are inherited in every category:
Base family
- Item name
- Item number
- Color
- Material
- Measures
- Shipping
- Notes
Exclusively the attribute "Content" does not apply to all products, but only to ball set "Little children come" and bedding "Christmas elf". Therefore, a family should be derived from the base family, which contains the attribute "Content".
Since no products can be created from a base family, we derive two families from it. One is the one described above, and the other is a family in which no other attributes are added except those inherited from the base family
We specify the following details for the individual attributes within the families:
Item name
This is a text attribute that we provide with a rule.
Rule: The text attribute article name must look like this: Bed linen "Christmas elf".
I.e. the product name (here: bedding) must come first, the product name (here: "Christmas elf") must be enclosed in quotation marks and come second. This ensures consistent naming of all products in the store.
The rule function is currently not yet fully developed.
Item number
This is a text attribute that we provide with a rule.
Rule: 8-digit number, must contain numbers and letters. This ensures that the shop-internal article number is actually stored and not, for example, a manufacturer number.
Attribute material
This is a list selection that we create in the family and from which can be selected when creating products:
Glass, Wood, Steel, Metal, Plastic, Rubber, Polyester, 100% Jute, 100% Cotton
Attribute measures
This is also a text attribute that we provide with a rule.
Rule: Format number x number or number x number x number
A separate attribute for dimensions, as well as the expansion of the rule function is on the roadmap and will come soon.
Attribute Color
This is a list selection that we create in the family and can be chosen from the point products are created:
transparent, white, black, gray, silver, gold, red, burgundy, pink, rosé, green, mint green, forest green...
Attribut further notes
This is a text attribute in which product notes could be maintained. Depending on the shop system, it may make more sense to maintain them directly in the shop.
Shipping notes
The same applies to shipping notes such as shipping duration and returns notes. Although these can be maintained in the PIM, it may make more sense via the shop system.
After creating the families, all products and articles can be created.
In the next step we can bundle the products in catalogs to edit and export them. We are currently working on a separate blog article for this, which will appear in the next few days!
